Don't let social media control you.

Updated: Feb 25, 2021

We can’t control a lot of things in life, but one thing we can control is our usage and exposure to social media. Social media is a double-edge sword because it was designed to connect and keep up with busy modern day lives. That initial intention has changed drastically to the point where our brains have been retrained to think “if it didn’t happen online, it didn’t happen in real life”. We have become so accustomed to building an online social profile that our authentic self and human imperfections strip away. The instant gratification we get from “swiping” is so powerful that it is more normalized to communicate through a platform than to have an organic conversation in person. We begin to compare every detail about ourself to a perfectly lit, edited, and posed photo that any self-esteem we did have, now seems non-existent. We live in a world where there is always the next best thing and sometimes all we need is to be grounded in what we value and love about our authentic self. Here are a few tips at starting to control your social media and create a custom feed that is healthy for YOU:

- Be selective

- It’s a tool, use it with care

- Figure out your intentions for using it

- Be mindful of your time

- Turn off notifications

- Unfollow those who hinder your mental health

- Take a break
